In the United States, Achmed is a very rare name, both as a first name and a surname. But it is a common name in the Middle East, including in Egypt, where this character lives. It is an Arabic name "highly praised" or "one who constantly thanks God." The writer of this story would have been well aware of the fact that this is a predominantly Muslim name and almost certainly intended for the character to be Muslim, although this may be unconfirmed.

Achmed encountered Honcho of the American-based Team America when Honcho was on a secret mission in Cairo, Egypt. After making contact with an intelligence officer, Achmed chased Honcho. Honcho managed to knock Achmed out and get away. Achmed was probably an operative of some sort, working with other side of whatever conflict Honcho was involved with. He was probably working with Monique Areadite's illegal weapons smuggling operation, which is what Honcho was in Egypt trying to thwart.
