The self-serving mutant Mystique sought the hand of the slain mutant known only as "Alchemist." Little is known about Alchemist, and we have no way to determine his religious affiliation. This is likely yet another example of a character whose name actually refers to a religious group that he does NOT belong to. (Other examples include Wiccan of the Young Avengers and Justice League member Gypsy.) Alchemy is a religion (or at least pseudo-religion), and a number of non-mutant characters have pursued the study and practice of alchemy to the point where they became alchemists, sometimes obtaining great power in the process. But the mutant Alchemist never studied genuine historical Alchemy. He was simply born a mutant and eventually (no doubt at the onset of puberty) developed his own natural ability to turn objects into gold by touching them. He named himself (or others named him) "Alchemy" based on this ability. There is no reason to believe he ever studied actual alchemy at all. Why would he need to? He already possessed the capability to accomplish one of the supreme goals of traditional alchemy: turning lead into gold.
