Number One was the second-in-command of the Hope of Kestor, the starship on which lived 500 remaining survivors who fled the destruction of their home planet. Number One was also a descendant of the Kestoran who first decided to keep secret the fact that 19,500 Kestorans fled on the ship but died during the escape. This secret was called the Great Lie of Kestor, and was handed down generation after generation to only one person.

In addition to being the Captain's first mate, Number One was also his mate (i.e., wife or lover). When she revealed the Great Lie to the Captain, he died and she took over leadership of the ship and the surving Kestoran race.
