Bob Benson was loosely based on real-life Jewish film director John Landis. Landis directed the Michael Jackson music video "Thriller," which is what the Dazzler/Teddy Lingard video "Chiller" was based on. Benson and Landis are similar in appearance, and the comic story includes a specific "tip of the hat" reference to An American Werewolf in London, which was also directed by Landis. The unfortunate deaths that occurred on the set of a previous Benson film are an allusion to the deaths on Landis's film Twilight Zone.
