A monstrous-looking alien imparted super-powers to Wes, Phaedra and "Kid Magma" through it's strange venomous bite. But most people bitten by this alien simply died from the process.

Batman repeatedly referred to the alien as "the parasite." The members of his team, the Outsiders, followed suite.

The alien was kept captive by Wes and Phaedra in an underground club located in the basement of the old Charlemagne Hotel on Kaiser Avenue in the Kingsrow Park section of Gotham City. People paid Wes and Phaedra $1,000 for a shot at being stung by the alien, which most people had apparently heard was some kind of new way to get high. Wes and Phaedra didn't seem to care that most people bitten by the alien died.
