Derek was not "simply" a hired butler and chauffeur who worked for Walter Barrett, the biological father of Sofia Mantega (a.k.a. Wind Dancer). Derek was actually an important person in Sofia's life. While Sofia's father was distant and aloof, Derek showed Sofia genuine human concern. Derek was actually more fatherly toward Sofia than her own father was.
