Young Matt Murdock's father was the boxer "Battlin'" Jack Murdock. When Jack Murdock was experiencing something of a resurgence in his career, the mob-connected criminal known as the "Fixer" pressured Jack Murdock to throw his last match, a match against Dynamite Dave. Jack Murdock refused to do so, and instead defeated Dynamite Dave in the boxing ring. Because of this, the Fixer had his henchman Slade murder Jack Murdock.

This murder, and the subsequent miscarriage of justice in which the perpetrators went free, was a major part of what inspired young Matt Murdock to eventually become the super-hero Daredevil.
