Ruby was the assistant to Joe, the owner and operator of the Tomahawk Lodge Motel. When X-Factor stayed in Joe's motel, he thought that mutants had attacked them in their room. (At that time, the public was unaware that the operatives of X-Factor were actually the founding members of the mutant super-hero team the X-Men.) Ruby and Joe showed the police an X-Factor advertisement and explained that was who was in their motel.
