J. Vernon Mann was an accomplished archeologist. Details of his personal religious beliefs and affiliation have not been revealed, but his story has some interesting religious connections. He was an expert in ancient languages and religion, was present at the Temple of Balthaak archaeological dig, and had expertise critical when super-heroes confronted the Examplars and their "God-Machine."

J. Vernon Mann met with Tony Stark, Abner Little and Sam McGee in the Nunevut territory. Mann brought them to the Temple of Balthaak. After running some tests on the temple, a craft seemed to attack them. Mann accidentally triggered a panel that opened a small hidden passage way into the temple. Mann told Iron Man and Stark's friends about the secret passage. Mann translated the inscription there and said it claimed the temple held an immense power source: the legendary Brazier of Balthaak. The legends say that this brazier (a type of lamp) burns as brightly today as it did a millenium ago.

After Inferno disappeared, Stark told Mann his suspicions about Inferno's true identity and connections to the Juggernaut. Later, Mann was present at the Avengers Mansion when Spider-Man arrived to warn people about the Exemplars. Mann warned Spider-Man that the Exemplars might be out of his league, and said he should leave them for heavy hitters like Thor and Iron Man to go up against. Mann accompanied Thor and Iron Man to the basement where they tried to stop the construction of the "God Machine."

Later, Mann was present with Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man and Charles Xavier as they watched the Exemplars finish constructing the "God Machine." Mann watched the super-heroes fight the Exemplars, and he watched as the Exemplars disappeared after the "God Machine." was destroyed.
