Desmond Marrs was something of a tragic figure. Despite being one of the world's six wealthiest men, he was not satisfied. When he first appeared he was trying to commit suicide, but was stopped by his sister Phoebe. Later Desmond successfully did commit suicide. Clearly he was not a happy man despite his vast wealth.
