Whisper was a mutant whose real name was Karl Reifschneider. During World War II, Reifschneider was a Nazi who worked as a guard at the Auschwitz prison camp. At that time, he did not know he was a mutant. Karl Reifschneider was personally responsible for killing numerous Jews, including Magneto's parents and sister, at the Nazi concentration camp.

Years later, after discovering that he was a mutant, Karl Reifschneider wanted to change his ways, distance himself from his Nazi past, and aid Magneto's war for mutant supremacy. Reifschneider tried to gain Magneto's trust by lying and saying that he, too, was a former Jewish concentration camp prisoner. When Magneto learned the truth about Reifschneider, he killed the man.
