"Marie" was simply a lifeless manikin. She wasn't alive or even temporarily animated. She was simply "alive" in the delusional imagination of the extremely lonely disfigured hermit Andreas Flec.

Andreas Flec routinely read beautiful poetry to Marie. Villagers, peeking into his home on the scene, believed they saw a real woman transfixed by Andreas Flec's magical powers. They mobbed Andreas Flec's home and killed him. Only afterward did they realize that "Marie" was simply a manikin, and was not the victim of an evil sorcerer's magic. The villagers realized that it was they who were the monster, not Andreas Flec.
