In the story titled "The Super-Duel in Space" in Action Comics #242 (July 1958), the villain Brainiac is introduced. Brainiac shrinks the city of Metropolis and puts it in a bottle on board his star ship. In panel 4 on page 8, Lois Lane realizes what has happened. She exclaims to fellow reporter Clark Kent, "The alien reduced us to Tom Thumb size! And . . . and for once, Superman isn't here to protect us!"
