Ezekiel nearly sacrificed Spider-Man to a giant spider in a Peruvian temple. It was Ezekiel's intention to derive power for himself via this sacrifice. At the last moment he realized how wrong he was, how he had planned to gain power in order to help people, but he had ended up becoming consumed only with the quest for power rather than helping people like Spider-Man actually does. At the last moment, Ezekiel replaced Spider-Man with himself for the ritual sacrifice.

The "Temple Spider" was tied to the totemistic sources of power that Ezekiel had tapped into (and which he claimed were the ultimate source of Spider-Man's powers as well).
