Sam "Spell" Binder was an animal trainer in a circus. He hypnotized and controlled gorillas. He was excited to find Monstro, a huge 30-foot-tall albino gorilla. He brought it from its native Africa to the United States, but returned it when he realized that it was blind and thus could not be hypnotized.
