Refugee Kryptonian Karsta Wor-Ul recalled how she and a number of other Kryptonian Stellar Navy soldiers deserted the military after ordered to return to Krypton. There was considerable anti-Kryptonian sentiment in that part of the galaxy after years of Kryptonian military expansionism. Karsta and her fellow deserters were on Rockmoon, which orbits a gas giant in an orange-sun system, when Almeraci soldiers in powered armor attacked them. One of the soldiers demanded: "Renegade Kryptonians! We demand your immediate surrender -- in the name of Maximec of Almerac!"
There were about 35 renegade Kryptonians left by that time. As Karsta soon realized, "the Almeraci clamp squad hadn't come alone. They had half a battle flight backing them up." Fellow Kryptonian renegades Kev-Dal and Doro-Sul died in this Almeraci attack before Karsta and the others were able to flee from Maximec's forces.
Maximec is no doubt an ancestor of Princess Maxima, a recurrent Superman foe and sometime hero.
The Almeracis are mentioned again in Superman #669. On page 21 in this issue (page 49 in the Superman: The Third Kryptonian trade paperback), Superman confronts Karsta Wor-Ul over the crimes she has admitted to committing over the years as a renegade. In panel 2, Karsta reacts strongly to his words, saying, "Wha-a-at!? What are you saying? You'd take me in? Turn me over to the Almeraci, the Thanagarians? Put me in Takron-Galtos?"
Apparently the Almeraci have continued to been a thorn in Karsta's side over the years, or she simply harbors strong feelings about them because of their initial attack on her and her fellow renegade Kryptonians.
