Verminus Rex was the prince of a race of humanoid rats known as "Short Teeth." Little is known about this race of rat creatures, but presumably they are uplifted animals. Verminus Rex was the last of his race, as the rest of his kind had been destroyed in unrevealed circumstances.

Verminus Rex came into conflict with the Ghost Rider of World War I. Verminus Rex died from a landmine during that time.

In more recent times, Verminus Rex was resurrected from the dead and imbued with great power by the demon Blackheart. Verminus Rex and three others served as Blackheart's "Spirits of Vengance," which he gathered in order to destroy Ghost Rider. Verminus Rex in this new incarnation was extremely powerful, but he was nonetheless defeated by the modern Ghost Rider.
