Dr. McCauley was stripped of his medical certificate by Holdenburg University of Science. He posed as a priest, calling himself "Father McCauley." (It is not even clear from this story whether he was an actual Catholic or not, but presumably he had enough Catholicism in his background or upbringing that he thought he could pull of such a charade.)
McCauley murdered people who came to see him in his capacity as a "priest." He re-built them and re-animated into a series of monsters, following the notes of the original Dr. Frankenstein. Ultimately, the actual Frankenstein's monster confronted McCauley and destroyed his monsters.
