The gargoyles were stone statues which were constructed as part of a Christian cathedral that was built on top of an ancient mystic power source of Druidic/Celtic paganism. The statues absorbed this mystic energy and eventually gained sentience. The powerful Druid sorcerer Derwyddon detected the sentience of these stone statues and sensed that they were in pain because of their long immobility. Derwyddon granted the statues the ability to move and encouraged these gargoyles to seek out the vengeance they sought. The gargoyles wanted to destroy Christians and Christian buildings in retaliation for the cathedral being built over the Celtic pagan power source.
Derwyddon realized that the gargoyles were corrupt. He tried to strip all of them of their mobility. He was able to do this with many of them, turning them back into un-moving statues. But many escaped, and Derwyddon spent centuries trying to track them all down so he could contain the evil he had unleashed.
