Professor Stephen Yarish originally appeared to be the had of "Project: SMASH." Actually, as the Hulk (and readers) later learned, "Project: SMASH" did not really exist but was part of an elaborate and convincing illusion the demon named Nightmare was subjecting the Hulk to. "Professor Yarish" was simply a mindless extradimensional that Nightmare brought to Nightmare Island and manipulated. The being or material that was presented as "Professor Yarish" may well have had no real sentience or personality of its own outside of Nightmare's own will.
