Bruce Wayne was having a foundation scientist show Manning the lab's recent development: X-23, which might be used to harden wood and make it last longer. (Oddly enough, the role of the scientist is filled by "you", the reader.) Manning accidentally knocked over a beaker containing the experimental compound X-23. The compound spilled on Bruce Wayne's hands, causing him to temporarily develop super-tough fists of steel.
