Although Mr. Mammoth battled Batman at one point (a battle depicted on the issue's cover), the circus strong man was really not a "villain." He was actually a very sweet man who came to Gotham City to put on a benefit show to raise money for the charitable Police Athletic League.

Mr. Mammoth was very fearful about inexplicable spells he had been having during which he feel very violent. Mr. Mammoth sincerely wanted to avoid hurting anybody and he sought out Batman's help to help him figure out what was wrong with him.
