Crooked brokers Meek and Bronson sell worthless oil stock to many investors, bilking them out of their money. What was worse, they hired assassins to kill somebody, purely out their greedy desire for even more money.
Superman, disguised as investor Homer Ramsey, bought up all the shares directly from the defrauded investors. Superman then got the oil field to actually produce oil. It turns out the oil field wasn't worthless. Meek and Bronson simply had found it more profitable to sell shares than to actually try to tap the oil. Once Superman's efforts to drill yielded a substantial flow of oil, Meek & Bronson realized they had a "gold mine" on their hands.
Without revealing that the oil well was now profitable, Meek & Bronson tried to buy back the shares they had sold (offering a price that would represent a significant loss to the investors). After all the investors told them they had already sold their shares to "Homer Ramsey," Meek & Bronson" tried to pressure Ramsey (secretly Superman) to sell. "Ramsey" wouldn't sell. So Meek & Bronson hired assassins Louie the Rat and Nate the Snake to kill "Homer Ramsey."
Meek & Bronson weren't necessarily bloodthirsty. They did not relish the prospect of hiring the assassins again. But it is clear that they had used the services of these hired killers a number of times in the past, and they were willing to do so again in order to get millions of dollars in profits from the now-flowing oil well.
The assassins of course failed to kill "Ramsey," as he was really the invulnerable super-hero Superman.
As "Ramsey," Superman told Meek and Bronson that he would sell them all the oil shares back for one million dollars. This was far more than they had made in the initial sale of the oil shares, but they agreed to do so because they knew the well was worth several times that. They pooled every cent they had and paid "Ramsey" for the oil shares in cash.
Clark then changed into Superman and forcibly took Meek & Bronson to the Black Gold Oil Well. In front of their eyes, Superman destroyed the oil derrick and then used fire to ignite the oil and destroy the well. Superman apparently did this in order to leave Meek & Bronson penniless, teach them a lesson, and render them incapable of further defrauding any one else.
When the devastated fraudulent brokers asked him why he did this, Superman explained: "It's just what you deserved! I'd advise you to quit selling stock, or I'll pay you another visit! From now on, stick to selling shoe-laces!"
