The Superman story in Action Comics #11 (Apr. 1939) opens with an unnamed reporter and Clark Kent asking a police sargeant for any interesting news stories. The unnamed reporter wears a green suit coat with a checkered pattern, a blow tie, and a blue fedora hat. "Sarge" tells them there is "no news today beyond a few drunks," but then an call comes in that interests both reporters. Sarge tells them: "Just a routine case: Guy commits suicide in broker's office!"

The unnamed reporter and Clark Kent both go to the office of Meek & Bronson - Brokers. There the police find the man who committed suicide - dead on the floor of the office. In his hand he clutches his shares in the "Black Gold Oil Well." The unnamed reporter then tells the police that they have on their hands a case of "murder, as well as thievery." The reporter explains that the man's death is the fault of the brokers because they sold him worthless stock and bilked him out of his money. The reporter knows this because he himself was one of the investors who lost money on the worthless stock. This prompts Clark Kent to investigate further - as Superman. The rest of the story focuses on the super-hero's investigation and his successful effort to expose the fraud and take down the fraudulent brokers.
