Marchetti read Clark Kent's article about sunken Spanish treasure in an inaccessible spot in the ocean and decided to go after it. Clark Kent was trying to retrieve the same treasure in order to provide rescue funding for a noble charity, the Kidtown reform boarding school. Marchetti competed against both Clark Kent and the team of another gang ("Big Boy" Chaney) using violent, illegal and potentially murderous methods.

Marchetti had one of his underlings, Mugsy, check out Clark Kent. Mugsy trailed the reporter and watched him arrange to rent out a large boat, the Dragon. With this information, Marchetti correctly deduced that Clark Kent was going after the treasure himself. Marchetti had his own men beat up sailors waiting to be hired at the pier so that he and his own men could get hired on as the crew of the ship Clark Kent rented. It was Marchetti's plan to use that position to steal the treasure retrieved by Clark Kent's efforts.
