Tom Croy was the manager of Larry Trent, the heavyweight champion of the world. But Croy was crooked. He "worked hand-in-glove with ruthless gangsters." Larry Trent was heavily favored to win a championship bout, but Croy's gangster associates bet against him. Croy drugged Larry Trent's drink so that the boxer lost the fight, allowing the gangsters to collect big on their bets. But the loss of the title due to being drugged cause Larry Trent to start a nosedive in his career that left him a stumble-bum has-been. Trent almost committed suicide, but was saved by Superman. After hearing his story, Superman agreed to help him. Superman disguised himself as Trent and won fight after fight, earning a new shot at a championship bout. Tom Croy re-introduced himself to "Larry Trent" (really Superman in disguise). Superman agreed to take Croy on again as a manager, but only did so in order to thwart his evil-doing and teach him a lesson. (Croy did not know that Larry Trent knew Croy had drugged him before the previous championship bout.) Although Superman had actually been the one fighting all of Larry Trent's bouts during his comeback, the hero knew that Trent was ready to right for himself in the championship bout because they had been training so extensively together. As predicted, Tom Croy once again planned with gangsters to throw the fight, and he once again tried to drug Trent. But Trent was wise to him and refused the drink Croy offered him before his big fight. Croy tried to force him to drink, but Superman grabbed Croy by the neck and forced him to drink the concoction. Then Croy's gambler accomplice tried to murder Larry Trent, but Superman held his hand over the muzzle of the gambler's handgun, which exploded in the killer's face.
