Soon after landing on a mysterious island raised from the ocean depths by Lex Luthor, Superman and Lois Lane were attacked by a giant rat. The over-sized rodent was one of many prehistoric monstrosities recreated by Lex Luthor in his biological labs in the undersea city he had salvaged. The giant rat attacked Lois Lane (who was still dazed after a pterodactyl attacked their plane) while Superman was getting water for her. Superman returned and intercepted the giant rat before could harm Lois. Superman grabbed the rat by its leg and whirled it round and round overhead before tossing it to the ocean, where it plummeted to its death. The conflict between Superman and the giant rat took place in 8 panels on pages 9 and 9 of the story retroactively titled "Luthor's Undersea City" in Superman #4 (Spring 1940).
