First Appearance: Action Comics (vol. 1) #25 (June 1940): "Amnesiac Robbers"
Number of Appearances: 2
Ally: Clark Kent
Clark Kent is trying to find out more about a string of mysterious robberies in which payroll messengers and armored car drivers have been robbed but have no memory of the robberies.
In panel 5 of page 2, the narrative caption reads: "Clark Kent, Daily Planet star reporter, is rebuffed at police headquarters."
Clark Kent asks a friendly-looking uniformed police officer, "What's all the excitement around here?"
The police officer, an older, nearly bald gentleman whose name is Pat, obviously knows Clark Kent well. He tells him, "Sorry, Clark! The Commissioner isn't seeing reporters today!"
Clark Kent can't get into the police commissioner's office, but he can hear what they are saying, due to his "superior hearing."
After listing to the police commissioner's conversation with an irate banker who has been robbed, Clark Kent bids his unknowing friend farewell. He tells the police officer who barred his entrance, "So-long, Pat! I know when I'm not wanted!"
In panel 8 of page 2, Pat waves a friendly good-bye to Clark Kent, saying, "Better luck next time, Clark!"
Clark Kent uses what he overheard to publish a story in the Daily Planet. After the headline is seen by all, one man at police headquarters exclaims (in panel 4 of page 3), "What--! How could this have leaked out?"
A slim uniformed police man points at Pat, accusing, "You! It was your job to keep the reporters away!"
Pat protests, "But I did! Not a single one got past me -- so help me!"
Oddly enough, Pat is not wearing his blue police uniform in panel 4 on page 3, which probably takes place the next day after Clark overheard the police commissioner's conversation. Pat, with the same rotund build and nearly bald head with a bit of gray hear at the very back of his head, is now seen wearing a green suit. This may have been an unintentional coloring mistake, or it may have been an intended difference, used to show that this is a new day. The police commissioner is also seen wearing a different suit on page 3 than he wore on page 2, so it Pat's change of clothes could fit this pattern.
