An unnamed schoolboy was enticed to play crooked slot machines in a store on the way to school by an unscrupulous store owner named Mr. Harde. Realizing he would be late, the boy said to himself, "Gee, if I'm late t'day, I'll spoil a perfect attendance record! Doggone that slot machine!"

The boy haphazardly darted across a street on his way to school. He was almost hit by a truck, but was fortunately saved by Clark Kent. The reporter was concerned about the negative effects of gambling on impressionable youth. Kent admonished the boy to be careful when crossing the street and to never play slot machines. The boy told Clark Kent, "You have my word, sir! --I'd better hurry or I'll be late!"
