An unnamed mechanic sabotaged an airplane that was bringing relief commission officials from the small South American country of San Caluma. The nation had been hit hard by earthquakes and tornadoes. The mechanic was working for Mumsen, an evil man who wanted to prevent relief supplies from arriving in San Caluma, which would leave the populace hungry and primed to accept his take-over of the nation.

Superman managed to prevent the sabotaged plane from crashing. Oddly enough, the mechanic himself was on the sabotaged plane. After the airplane was safely on the ground, police arrested the mechanic. He vowed to never tell why he did what he did. But Superman broke into jail to question him. The mechanic was frightened enough by Superman's threat of violence that he agreed to talk. But before he could do so, a guard who was in the pay of the unknown enemy shot and killed the mechanic to silence him. Unfortunately, one of the corrupt guard's bullets bouhced off the stone wall and killed him. Superman thus still did not know who the now-dead mechanic was working for.
