S'yan was the uncle of T'Challa's, the Wakandan king best known as the heroic Black Panther. After the death of the previous Black Panther, T'Challa's father T'Chaka, S'yan took on the roleo of Black Panther until T'Challa became the Wakandan king and assumed the role of Black Panther for himself.

T'Challa's uncle, the Black Panther immediatly prior to him, first appeared in Black Panther (vol. 1) #8 (Mar. 1978). But the character's given name (S'yan) was not revealed until Black Panther (vol. 4) #1 (Apr. 2005).
