Note: auto shop's T-shirt worn by high stakes card player

A high-stakes gambler seen in a Las Vegas casino in the opening scene in Justice League of America #35 (Sep. 2009) wears a shirt with the words "Derenick's Auto" emblazoned on the front. The shirt (and the words on it) were drawn by penciller Tom Derenick.

We are not assuming that the person who is wearing the shirt is Mr. Derenick himself. He could well be an employee of the shop. Interestingly enough, there really is a "Derenick's Auto Repair" located in Taylor, Pennsylvania, according to a Taylor Lion's Club webpage viewed 31 July 2009. The listing for this contributor to a local baseball tournament reads: "Derenick's Auto Repair. Owner: Ed Derenick: Computerized Car Care, General Repairing, Offical State Inspection Station. 460 North Main Street Taylor, Pa. 18517, (570) 562-1825."

Although we have not confirmed it, one might well imagine that shop proprietor Ed Derenick is related to story penciller Tom Derenick. This could simply be a coincidence, but "Derenick" is a fairly unusual name. The shop name on the shirt, seen in just one panel, might be a little homage or inside joke on the part of the part of the artist.
