Scott Goodman was a pre-med student who was dating Betty Simpson. Betty was he daughter of the U.S. Secretary of State.

Betty found out that Scott was cheating on him. She and her best friend Veronica Robbins decided to get out of town and get away from Scott for good. They embarked on a cross-country road trip.

Stopping at a diner in the tiny town of Dinosaur, Colorado, Betty left a voice message for Scott, telling him that she was gone and never wanted to see him again. Soon after leaving this message, the bizarre conditions of Dinosaur, Colorado made Betty and Veronica their latest victims. The two young women disappeared.

Betty Simpson's father enlisted the aid of Norman Osborn and his government sanctioned Avengers team (a.k.a. the "Dark Avengers"). When briefed about the events they were to investigate, team member Bullseye (in the guise of "Hawkeye") immediately suggested that Scott was the culprit. Team administrative assistant Veronica Hand pointed out that Scott had been in clase in Washington D.C., clear across the country, in front of over a hundred eyewitnesses. He could not have done it.

When Veronica Hand shows the Avengers information about the case, there is a tiny picture of Scott Goodman on a viewscreen, alongside pictures of Betty and Veronica, as well as a map of the down they disappeared in. Other than this, Scott does not actually appear "on panel" in this story.

Scott Goodman referred to in a number of places in this issue, starting on the first page of actual story (after the text-based re-cap page) when Betty and Veronica discuss whether or not Betty should call him. Betty states, "I think I should call him and tell him I left town."

Veronica responds, "Absolutely not."

Betty persists, saying, "No, I should."

Veronica exclaims, "He cheated on you."

The pair of young women then stop at a diner in Dinosaur, Colorado because Veronica needs to use the facilities.

On pages 4 and 5, Veronica uses her cell phone to call Scott Goodman while she is in the restroom. She leaves a message, saying, "Hey, it's me. When you get this you'll know I've left town and left you. And I just want to say I don't know how guys like you--"

Scott Goodman is discussed in the Avengers briefing on pages 13. It is only here, in panel 1, that Scott Goodman is named. It is in this same panel that the Avengers look at viewing screens which display what we assume to be Scott's photo, alongside photos of Betty and Veronica.
