In the small town of Hadley, Ronald Van Norton was a soft-hearted millionaire who secretly used his wealth to fund his "Robin Hood" campaign, wherein he pretended to rob from the rich and give to the poor. He would appear in a mask so that nobody would know who he really was.

Van Norton also maintained a third identity, that of "Mark Benton," a man who Lois Lane met and was very attracted to. He happened to look very much like Clark Kent, but whereas Clark was timid, Benton was manly. Lois Lane and Mark Benton even got engaged, but broke the engagement off when Lois found out he had kept so many secrets from her.
