Archer originally didn't know very much about Jude Black, the person he used as a host body. When he called Rachel Black (Jude's estranged wife), she said that she prayed he was dead and hung up on it.
Archer contacted Rachel Black anyway and worked hard to prove that he would never hurt her again. Archer wasn't actually responsible for Jude Black's past misdeeds. But now that he was inhabiting Jude Black's body, he wanted Jude Black to be a person Rachel could count on.
