Agnes was a maid who worked in a castle in medieval Europe. The castle belonged to Matthias, a nobleman who was also a prominent church figure.

In the castle lived Hope, the young daughter of Matthias. Hope regarded Agnes as her maid. Agnes was also Hope's only friend.

When a horrific plague hit their community, Agnes became ill with this disease. Hope used a treatment she had learned about from Niccolo to try to help Agnes. The maid did indeed recover, but with disastrous unforseen results: Hope was burned at the stake as a witch for having successfully treated Agnes. The people of the community assumed Hope had used witchcraft to cure her friend.

Before she died, Hope chanted a summoning ritual she had learned. Hope founder herself in Hell and emerged as "Lady Death."
