Sam was a "Gentile" (i.e., non-Jewish) and apparently a Christian. He met and fell in love with a young Jewish immigrant who had just recently come to the United States from war-torn Europe.

Sam married the young woman, who was later known as "Mrs. Scully." Her aunt rejected her after the marriage, because she felt she had rejected their family's Jewish faith by marrying outside of their religion.

Mrs. Scully recalled her marriage and life with Sam many years later as she talked to Jean Grey in the cemetery where Jean's death (really the death of the Phoenix) was marked.
