Walter Langford is the founder of Walter Langford's Annual Fundraiser for the Preservation of Victorian Architecture. Attendees at this event, held at the Chapman Building, were taken hostage by mercenaries in the employ of the Breakworld alien Ord.

The newly formed "Astonishing" squad of X-Men (Cyclops, Wolverine, Kitty Pryde, Emma Frost and Beast) responded to the situation in order to rescue the hostages.
