A central tenet of the Karem religion is that touching the Motyka Bone would transport people to Heaven. This was a superstitious belief.
The Karem tribespeople did not understand that what was really happening was that they the "Motyka Bone," which appeared to be a natural fossil, was actually left by the alien Nuwali race. The Nuwali, who had built the Savage Land on commission for the Beyonders, placed the Motyka Bone in the Savage Land to transport humans to them so they could harvest their adrenalin (epinephrine). The Nuwali desired to use the epinephrine as a poison against the Beyonders, who had failed to pay them fully for their services in building the Savage Land.
