The "Mongrels" were a warrior sect of the Ru'Tai (a race of alien demons). The Mongrels came to Earth along with the powerful Ru'Tai villain Pillgrimm. The Mongrels preyed on people in Salem Center. Their murders were originally blamed on the detachable abdominal slugs of the X-Man known as "Maggott."
