Sir Phillip Desmond was a British scientist who invented Blue-Face toxin. HYDRA agents killed him so that they could steal his invention and claim it for themselves. Under Baron Strucker's leadership, HYDRA intended to use the invention in a plot called "Project: Blue-Face."

Phillip Desmond's son Alan, as a talented counter-spy, worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. and infiltrated HYDRA to foil the plot.
