Mrs. Fornes was a woman who was distraught because she could not find her son. Sometimes they fought and sometimes he stayed away from home, staying at the homes of friends. But he always called her every day. It had been three days since she heard from him and she was worried.
Mrs. Fornes went to a local fire station. Johnny Storm, the super-hero known as the Human Torch, happened to be working there. Although Storm's fellow firefighter tried to turn Mrs. Fornes away (because missing persons aren't a police matter), he said he would help.
Eventually Johnny Storm and his friend Namor the Sub-Mariner found where the woman's son Javier had fallen through the frozen ice of the Hudson river. They recovered his body.
Mrs. Fornes had a cousin named Isabel who gave her information that helped her and the Human Torch find Javier.
Mrs. Fornes told the Human Torch: "Mi Javier... he's a good boy. Even though we fight, he calls me. Every night. To tell me he's okay, staying with friends. But three days ago... the calls stop. And two days ago, my cousin Isabel... she hears the woman she works for talking. She saw on the news, this woman, a story about a man -- a small man -- who fell through the ice. People saw him disappear -- like a ghost."
