Lin's father asked for Shang-Chi to help rescue her from Jimmy Lo and the Jade Dragon Ma. Shang-Chi called Lin's father "Uncle," so it might have seemed that Lin is Shang-Chi's cousin. But Shang-Chi used the term "Uncle" and "Aunt" in reference to Lin's parents merely as a sign of respect. They were not actually related by blood.
In her first appearance, Shang-Chi referred to Lin as "Lan." After that, she was referred to consistently as "Lin." Shang-Chi's use of the name "Lan" may simply have been a mistake.
