Cathy Webster returned to her dorm room one day and found her roommate Jennifer making out with a new boyfriend: Joe. Although it was Cathy's roommate Jennifer who snuck this male student into their dorm room, it was Cathy herself who ended up getting caught by the resident assistant, and suspended from school. This led to Cathy deciding to take Dr. Wentworth up on her offer to undergo an experiment, which empowered Cathy and led to her becoming the costumed hero "Free Spirit."
