Julia was a desk clerk who worked at S.H.I.E.L.D. Dr. Erik Gorbo, a SHIELD scientist, was stricken by her, but she saw him only as a friend because he was not attractive or physically impressive. Dr. Gorbo used an experimental serum on himself in order to become more muscular, but the serum transformed him into the Monster Ape.

Dr. Gorbo tried to ask Julia out on a date, but she spurned him, saying she wanted to go see a demonstration of Project Earth-Dig instead. Angered that Julia chose Project Earth-Dig over him, Dr. Gorbo transformed himself into Monster Ape again and tried to sabotage the project.

Dr. Gorbo (as Monster Ape) joined forces with Mole Man, who was also trying to sabotage the project. But then he remembered that Julia as at the event, and that Mole Man's weapon would hurt her as well as destroy the project. So Gorbo blocked the weapon with his own body to save Julia's life. The Monster Ape was mortally wounded and died on the scene.
