William Winters was a book publisher. Two of the authors whose works he published were Ted Wayne and Ellis Brent.

Winters was apparently unaware that Ted Wayne murdered Ellis Brent, stole his writing, and passed it off as his own. After this murder, the ghostly hands of Ellis Brent sought vengeance on Ted Wayne. The ghostly hands, known as the "Clutching Hands," killed William Winters in order to frame Ted Wayne for the crime. The Clutching Hands even signed a fake confession implicating Wayne in the publisher's murder.

Eventually the Clutching Hands killed Ted Wayne himself.

If you think about it, William Winters really got a raw deal in all this. He didn't murder anybody, and there is no indication he even knew that Wayne stole Ellis Brent's work. But the ghost of Ellis Brent killed him anyway.
