Mitch was a sports reporter in an American city (NOT New York) whose "biggest claim to fame thus far has been its baseball team's contract with Bob Russo. (See panel 1, page 11, Captain America #178).
During a brief period of time when a disillusioned Steve Rogers quit being Captain America, a few other men tried to fill the role. One of them was Bob Russo, the "highest-paid third baseman in history."
Mitch is seen in panels 3 and 4 on page 7 in Captain America (vol. 1) #178.
In the locker room after a baseball game, Bob Russo said to sports reporter Mitch: "Got a story for you boys today, Mitch. GIve you a chance to get your by-line someplace besides the sports page for once! First off, I'm quitting the Bears--"
Mitch was shocked. He exclaimed: "Wha-at?"
Bob Russo continued: "--and second... well, look at it this way: There's no more Captain America, right? What that means is, there's no costumed hero calling himself Captain America, right? Well, here's your story, Mitch--- --starting tonight, that's who I'm going to be!"
A young blonde kid in the locker room shouted: "A new Captain America! Incredible!"
