A powerful parasitic alien known as "The Captive" escaped confinement on a black hole and fled, arriving on Earth on the farm of local farmer Jim Hendricks. Hendricks managed to contact Captain America, who arrived to investigate. Cap and Hendricks thought that the Captive was an innocent victim pursuing an unjust force. They were not aware of how evil and dangerous the Captive really was.

A pursuing alien vessel orbited the Earth and sent down agents to try to re-capture or kill the Captive, but Jim Hendricks and Captain America defended their quary. After Jim Hendricks and Captain America destroyed three Stalkers and a Combatron, the aliens sent down a space pod from which emerged dozens of Magnoids.

The Magnoids have been described alternatively as roboots and also as mineral life forms. They were chosen specifically to combat the alien Epsiloni (such as the Captive) because they were not susceptible to the Epsilonis' power to steal life force. It is not entirley clear if the Magnoids are artificially-created life forms, robots, or an existing race of mineral-based aliens utilized by those who hunted the Captive.

Captain America battled some of the Magnoids, but there were so many, he was almost overcome by their forces. He managed to escape the Magnoids and flee to the Captive's space craft. But while there, he discovered that the Captive had killed Jim Hendricks. So Captain America was no longer interested in fighting the Magnoids. He knew then that the Captive was the real enemy.
