Clearcut is a hero with the power to manifest blades at will. For a time, Clearcut posed as an ally of the villain Shinobi Shaw. But he only did this in order to disrupt Shinobi Shaw's villainous endeavors.

Clearcut infiltrated the Hellfire Club and kept close watch Shinobi Shaw, who led the Club at that time, at the behest of his old friend, Cable. Clearcut had a debt he owed Cable. When he saved the lives of Cable and his team (X-Force), this debt was considered settled.

Clearcut pretended that he was a mutant, but later revealed that he wasn't really a mutant. Apparently his ability to manifest blades out of thin air has some other explanation.
