Professor Costene was a brilliant roboticist who was kidnapped by the villainous Vulture (Isidoro Scarlotti). The Vulture kidnapped Professor Costene in order to force him to reveal his robot formula. After the Vulture obtained the formula from Costene, he killed the professor.

The Vulture used Costene's formula to build his crime robots, including the massive Metallo.

The superheroes Human Torch (Jim Hammond) and Toro investigated the kidnapping of Professor Costene. They were able to find the Vulture's hideout and destroy the robots he had created, but the Vulture himself got away.
